Understanding Inclusion

Increasingly research and practice is showing that well-managed diversity in teams drives higher performance.

Whilst legislation is in place to protect minority groups in the workplace, for organisations to fully benefit from having a diverse workforce, a greater understanding of how to create and manage teams of difference is necessary.

This half-day workshop will help managers understand:

  • The difference between diversity and inclusion?
  • What, exactly, is discrimination
  • What part stereotypes play

Designed to be participative, the workshop will provide participants with the tools and techniques necessary to overcome fears, identify boundaries, and to have the confidence to manage teams well.

Topics covered include:

  • Definitions of inclusion, diversity and discrimination
  • Stereotypes and how to avoid them
  • Facilitated group discussion around people’s fears and the barriers to open discussion about inclusion

Toolkit 1:

  • What should managers do? And shouldn’t do?
  • Questions for managers to ask

Self-assessment:

Assessing the validity of the golden rule – “treat others as you’d like to be treated” (hint: it’s not a good rule), and identify what fairness is really about. The group work here is about understanding how we might be perceived by others.

Toolkit 2:

  • Framework for dealing with someone whose beliefs are antithetical to the manager’s own
  • How to identify where a manager’s own bias might lead to making bad decisions at work

Action planning:

Looking at future directions, and the links between inclusion and workforce engagement.
